Alcohol is reasonably established in our society. An alcohol beverage from time to time is accepted, for example drinking after work. This is why quit drinking may be difficult during pregnancy.  Research tells us that a lot pregnant women drink alcohol, so don’t be ashamed to tell us.  It is important that your are being honest about your drinking behaviour, because it may have consuquences for the baby. We may help you when you tell us.  We understand it can be difficult to decrease of stop the use of alcohol, especially when it is a custom.

The organs of the baby are constantly in development during pregnancy. The alcohol that you use will end up at the baby by your blood and placenta. The promillage in mother and baby is the same, but because the baby is smaller than you he/she will ingest proportionally more alcohol. Moreover the alcohol cannot (enough) be dispatched through the placenta to the mother. The baby needs to process the alcohol by itself with his upripe liver whereby it may take a long time before the alcohol is out of the babies blood.

What can be the effect of alcohol during pregnancy?
* Alcohol has effect to mitosis, organ development and to the activity of neurotransmitters.
* Alcohol abuse in the first three months may lead to deviations on the hart, arms, eyes, legs, teeth, palate, external genitals and ears. You’ll have an increased risk to miscarriage.
* Alcohol abuse in the second and third trimester may lead to fetal growrestriction (the baby will not grow as well as he should, witch is a disadvantage to it’s health) and neurological defects.
* Alcohol abuse during any period of pregnancy may influence the development of the central nervous system.  There is an increased risk to premature labour and  Fetal-alcohol-syndrome (the baby will have lifetime healthproblems or even be mentally retarded).
